Dillon started a drawing back in 2004 when he was six years old which really caught my attention. There were treasure hunter kids his age with horses and a volcano, not to mention a treasure. I asked him where he got the idea for the drawing and he said it just popped into his head. So I suggested that this might be a good beginning for an adventure story. He immediately got busy making more drawings to follow upon the first one. After about ten pages of drawings I knew he was on to something and we encouraged him to keep going. When asked if he had a name for the story yet, he replied "The Aliens' Treasure".
Mind you, he was only 6 years old and had never taken drawing lessons. The drawings are mostly stick figures, but the story itself is what carries the book. Since then he has taken lessons and draws constantly, his next book will surprise you. The story developed with very little suggestions from his parents. Dillon created this whole story the way he wanted it to flow; the chapters all have "cliff hangers" which he instinctively included and then close to the end the energy and activity builds and builds to a surprise ending.
Of course anytime we create something we need to be in the right mood and setting. Over the next two years Dillon found the time and inspiration here and there to continue his story and finally in 2006 it was complete. Seventy-seven pages of illustrations of a fantastic tale of treasure hunters, space pirates, aliens and monsters; things that most young kids daydream about now and then. So I sat down with him and had him explain to me what was going on in each drawing as I transcribed the story into the computer. I made only a few grammatical corrections so that the narration still has that kid feeling.
Dillon was surprised that all of this came out of his own imagination. He has been encouraged by many of our friends to keep going and to create another story. Look for his next adventure story in the near future.
